Caffarelli Island Lighthouse
The Caffarelli light was established in 1967. It is a round metal tower with an AGA lantern and drum lens. It was an unmanned light.
History
Caffarelli Island sits at the mouth of King Sound, to the east of Cape Leveque.
The seas around the island presented a hazard to shipping long before the light was established. In June 1915 the pearling schooner Alice came to grief on a reef near Caffarelli Island. On 16 June seven crewmen from the Alice came ashore at the Cape Leveque lighthouse in a dinghy. The lightkeeper, Arthur Jeapes, sent the assistant keeper to the Chilli Creek Mission to obtain a lugger to go to the reef to rescue the remaining nineteen members of the crew, including the captain, who had remained on board. Thirteen of the crew were swept away after they climbed onto the reef, which was inundated by the rising tide.
