Hamelin Island Lighthouse

The Hamelin Island lighthouse was completed in 1938. It was an automatic light on an 18-foot-high concrete tower. The light was 120ft above sea level.

Hamelin Island lit the dark stretch of coast between Capes Leeuwin and Naturaliste.

The wooden structure used to winch materials to the construction site still stands adjacent to the tower.

Hamelin Bay was a significant port for the export of timber in the late nineteenth century. A 600-metre-long jetty was constructed in 1881 but was abandoned by 1913. It was largely destroyed by fire in 1921 and only a few remnants remain today.

The Hamelin Island lighthouse became redundant when the nearby Foul Bay lighthouse was lit in 1967.

The AGA lantern from Hamelin Island now tops the Guilderton lighthouse and the AGA triple bullseye lens and sunvalve are on display at the Guilderton Country Club.
