Pelsaert Island Lighthouse

The lighthouse is a 20-metre high stainless steel column that was erected in 1974 and converted to solar power in 1984. The light was never manned.

History

Pelsaert Island is part of the Houtman Abrolhos group of islands, which are best known for the infamous wreck of the VOC ship Batavia in 1629. The island is named after the commander and senior merchant on the ship, Francisco Pelsaert.

The island is a noted nesting ground for a number of bird species. The Abrolhos group was gazetted as an A Class reserve in 1929

In the first part of the twentieth century guano mining took place on Pelsaert Island. Mining ceased in 1946 and a holiday camp was established on the island. Conditions were basic and the supply of fresh water was a problem.
